Words & Wellness

Author's Insights

Growing up in a family immersed in dentistry, my path into the field felt natural. My father, the first African American children’s dentist southwest of the Mississippi River, inspired in me a deep passion for oral health. I spent my early years working in his office, comforting anxious kids and discovering how creativity could enhance patient care.

While my paternal grandfather was a dentist, my maternal grandfather owned a candy store—an ironic mix that deepened my appreciation for balancing enjoyment with health. This contrast sparked my dedication to oral health.

After earning my degree in Dental Hygiene in 1990, I’ve spent over 34 years recognizing the mouth’s crucial role in overall wellness, blending my dental expertise with creative storytelling. My children's book series, The Hot S.P.I.T. Chronicles, merges art with health education, teaching kids and caregivers about the importance of dental care. Through partnerships with schools and healthcare facilities, our traveling exhibits and presentations bring these lessons to communities.

As both a dental hygienist and artist, I connect oral health with overall wellness, inspiring people of all ages to adopt healthy habits for a thriving and joyful future.
