Although I like working in a variety of mediums, collage and mosaics are my favorites. Both involve the process of combining or collecting a variety of 'items' made from anything such as tiles, metals, papers or fabrics. Since I'm always on the look out for inspiration, I have a 'thing' for collecting unique items, touch stones if you will, to incorporate into my artwork. Not knowing exactly how or when these items will be placed does not matter, it's the reminder of the inspiration they possess that eventually conveys in the story of my artwork . I also consider quilting to be a category of collage work, so naturally I made it a point to soak up a huge dose of creative inspiration and a collection of colorful ideas at The 2017 International Quilt Festival/Houston.
Folks, quilting is not just for lil old ladies in the country! This art form has taken on a millennial style of its' own. Historically, quilting has been a social art form where women would gather to repurpose remnant clothing items that they would miticulously cut into geometrical shapes and patterns and sew together to make bed covers. However, in modern day 2017 we have a growing number of materials used for packaging and artist are literally pushing the envelope to creatively connect materials and ideas together in the quilting world. This includes materials such as tear resistant envelopes, plastics, hemp, cottons, beaded, embellishments of keys, springs, jewelry, sequins and buttons. The festival featured more than 1,500 quilts and unique works of textile art on display from all around the world.
So, if you did't make it to this year's, here is a little snippet to share but be sure to put it on your calendar for next year to expand your creative horizons. But in the meantime, keep your eyes and ears open because inspiration is all around us!
