The Experience of Color in Our Lives
Have you ever noticed how colors can dramatically affect your mood and environment? The soothing blues that calm us, the vibrant reds that energize our creativity – color's influence is everywhere. Art brings this color power into our daily spaces in a uniquely personal way. Whether it's a small sketch brightening your workspace or a bold canvas transforming your living area, art enriches our lives with hues that match our moods and seasons.
Art as Self-Love and Inspiration
Choosing art goes beyond mere decoration; it's an act of self-love and a source of continuous inspiration. It's a daily reminder to appreciate beauty and can turn even the smallest spaces into havens of joy and tranquility. My passion for color is boundless, with its greatest gift being the inspiration it provides, igniting creativity and joy with every hue.
The Cloister Gallery, combined with the amazing Tree Beards Restaurant, creates the perfect setting for the "I Love HUE” Collection. It's a place where my art can live and breathe among those who appreciate the connection between a vibrant life and vibrant hues. This space isn't just about viewing art; it's about experiencing it amidst the spiritual and flavorful backdrop of one of my favorite and most unique eateries.
I've lined up a couple of special events to make this exhibition even more memorable:
"I Love HUE" goes beyond a traditional exhibition; it's an invitation to explore, feel, and connect on a profound level. Art has the power to transform, heal, and unite us. With extended viewing opportunities during Tree Beards' restaurant hours (Mon-Fri, 11 am - 2 pm), there's plenty of time to immerse yourself in creativity and find that perfect piece to become a collector.
This February, immerse yourself in a celebration that transcends the ordinary, showcasing the power of art to connect, inspire, and transform. Whether engaging directly with art over lunch or feeling the collective energy of the reception, these events promise a memorable exploration of creativity and human connection and self love.
Best to HUE!

Happy Martin Luther King Day! Just wanted to share a glimpse into the Garden Art Workshop we had on January 13th at Booker T. Washington High School, all thanks to Beauty's Garden for sponsoring this creative event!
Through this hands-on activity, we aimed to cultivate understanding and kindness, reflecting on how every color contributes to the diaspora in our diverse and united community. In the workshop, we used paint markers to add a pop of personality to our flower pots as participants selected colors and how they can affect our mood. Plus, everyone got to design their pots in unique ways, resulting in some really creative designs.
We also got our hands into some gardening, planting mint and rosemary in our newly decorated pots. It wasn't just about planting; we learned loads about these herbs, like their health benefits and different ways to use them.
The whole day was about bringing Dr. King's vision to life in our own little way. We combined art, gardening, and learning in a fun, casual setting. Great conversations, new friends, and a whole lot of community spirit – that's what it was all about. This is why community art projects are so important – they spark creativity and bring us together, just like Dr. King dreamed. Great way to learn, have fun, and connect with each other! Thanks to everyone who made it such a memorable day!

Welcome to 2024, a year that greets us with the promise of fresh starts and vibrant possibilities. As we embrace the theme "New Year, New Hue," it's the perfect time to reflect on our creative aspirations and how we can bring more color into our lives, both literally and metaphorically.
At the heart of "New Year, New Hue" is the idea of making and keeping creative commitments. These are promises we make to ourselves to nurture our artistic spirits, to explore new avenues of expression, and to dedicate time to what truly brings us joy and fulfillment. Whether you are a seasoned artist or someone just beginning to dabble in the arts, the new year is an ideal backdrop for setting these intentions.
To kickstart this journey, we are excited to invite you to our upcoming Vision Board Workshop. This hands-on workshop is not just about cutting and pasting images onto a board; it's about setting clear, visual intentions for the year. It's a chance to manifest your dreams and goals in a tangible form.
Date & Time: January 20, 2024 10:00am - 1:00pm
Location: 3602 Southmore Houston, Texas 77004
In this session, we'll guide you through the process of selecting images and words that resonate with your aspirations for 2024. Whether it's a career goal, a personal milestone, or a health objective, your vision board will serve as a daily reminder of these intentions.
A vision board is a powerful tool. It brings our deepest desires to the surface and allows us to see them, acknowledge them, and work towards them daily. It's a creative commitment in itself – a commitment to listen to our inner voices and give them a visual form.
Our journey doesn't end with the Vision Board Workshop. Throughout the year, our studio calendar is filled with various Expressive Arts Workshops. These workshops are designed to help you maintain your creative momentum and check in with your 'hue' – your unique artistic expression and color in this world.
From painting to sculpture, from photography to mixed media, each workshop offers a chance to explore a different facet of your creativity. They are not just classes; they are experiences where you can learn, create, and connect with like-minded individuals.
We encourage you to make these workshops part of your yearly creative check-in. They are opportunities to assess how well you're keeping up with your artistic goals and to recalibrate if necessary. And what better way to stay committed than to regularly immerse yourself in a community that shares your passion?
As we step into this new year, let's make a collective commitment to our creativity. Let's fill 2024 with hues that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. Join us at our Vision Board Workshop and throughout the year at our various Expressive Arts Workshops. Together, let's make 2024 a masterpiece of our own making. Let's make this year, our year of 'New Hue'!

In Houston's historic Third Ward, the Alabama Gardens has grown from a modest effort to transform a neglected lot into a thriving community space since its inception in 1985. Founded by Verious and Voyall Smith alongside a group of friends, this garden was established to address the critical need for fresh produce in an area marked as a "food desert," providing vital nourishment to the community with a variety of seasonal vegetables like tomatoes, okra and peppers.
Over the years, the garden has seen a change in leadership, with Terry Garner, a longtime member, taking over as coordinator in 2021. His dedication has been instrumental in continuing the garden's legacy of community service and environmental stewardship. The garden's development led to partnerships with figures like Dr. Bob Randal and organizations such as Urban Harvest, enhancing its impact in fostering sustainable community practices.
In collaboration with Urban Harvest, The "Soul Food Garden Art Project," engaged local residence in a series of workshops to co-create a mosaic mural, welcoming visitors into the Alabama Garden. Kim Perry, Director of Garden Education for Urban Harvest, played a pivotal role by coordinating the inclusion of our workshops under their program schedule, thereby opening up these learning opportunities to a wider audience of garden enthusiasts and Urban Harvest supporters, all in support of the Alabama Gardens. Participants in these workshops gained hands-on experience in mosaic-art making, contributing to the garden's aesthetic while equipping themselves for future artistic endeavors. This inspires a sense of wellness and environmental stewardship within the community.
Funded by the City of Houston and the Houston Arts Alliance, this project engaged community members in the art of mosaics to promote healthier lifestyles through gardening. The goal is to bring the community together to raise awareness of the benefits of the Alabama Gardens, and to use public art to help transform a local civic space into a cultural and artistic destination .
Alabama Gardens continues to invite community participation and celebrate its achievements, like the upcoming Monthly Meetup and Annual Garden Luncheon" event December 2, from 9am to 12pm. This event is a testament to the community's resilience and commitment to shared goals. As we continue nurturing Houston's oldest community garden, we look forward to more initiatives that integrate art and gardening, strengthening our community bonds through public art.

Childhood memories often hold a simple yet profound magic. Blowing the perfect bubblegum bubble—the feeling of freedom and pure happiness. It's a slice of life's carefree joy we can all relate to. And that’s precisely what "Bubblegum Calling Home" captures, inviting us to revisit that wonderful feeling.
"Bubblegum Calling Home," one of three artworks recently acquired, now envelops the spaces of Women’s & Children’s Hospital. During the pre-opening event in early August, I witnessed the perfect placement of this piece. But this art transcends mere decoration.
As a collage artist, I relish in the diversity of textures and patterns that converge within my creations. "Bubblegum Calling Home" resonates with this vibrant diversity, a testament to the tapestry of life itself. Like the flow of creativity that knows no bounds, my artwork mirrors the beauty of allowing experiences to seamlessly weave in and out of our existence.
Incorporating a medley of pastel hues and accentuated with touches of shimmering iridescent gold, the artwork captures a sense of whimsy and enchantment combining hand-painted designs with handmade paper and gift remnants. A fusion of stories, like life itself
I aspire for "Bubblegum Calling Home" to evoke this feeling in all who encounter it - patients seeking solace, visitors exploring, doctors navigating their rounds, nurses providing comfort, and families uniting. The artwork is a portal to that rare sense of unburdened release, encapsulated within its vibrant layers. More than a collage; it's a conduit for emotions and memories, an invitation to embrace healing thru the enchantment of creative expression.
The SaludArte Healing Arts Program grasps this profound truth, infusing the natural fun and comforting embrace of art into the very essence of patient spaces. This magic of healing extends further—imagine your doctors office or dental practice undergoing a transformative touch through art.
Stay tuned for updates on the Women’s & Children’s Hospital's opening and the incredible impact of the SaludArte Healing Arts Program. Learn more about my artistic journey and explore my creations on my website

Folks, quilting is not just for lil old ladies in the country! This art form has taken on a millennial style of its' own. Historically, quilting has been a social art form where women would gather to repurpose remnant clothing items that they would miticulously cut into geometrical shapes and patterns and sew together to make bed covers. However, in modern day 2017 we have a growing number of materials used for packaging and artist are literally pushing the envelope to creatively connect materials and ideas together in the quilting world. This includes materials such as tear resistant envelopes, plastics, hemp, cottons, beaded, embellishments of keys, springs, jewelry, sequins and buttons. The festival featured more than 1,500 quilts and unique works of textile art on display from all around the world.
So, if you did't make it to this year's, here is a little snippet to share but be sure to put it on your calendar for next year to expand your creative horizons. But in the meantime, keep your eyes and ears open because inspiration is all around us!
Peace and Smiles!

Evser Kid Deserves a Healthy SMILE!!
In April 2011, we hosted an Arts-in- Dentistry Workshop during The American Dental Association’s Give Kids A Smile Day hosted at The University of Texas School of Dentistry located in Houston, Texas. The American Dental Association (ADA) recognized that grassroots efforts has has helped to raise awareness about the importance of oral health to overall health, and about the staggering need that exists among millions of children who go without care.
Today, Give Kids A Smile is the ADA Foundation’s signature access to oral health care program for underserved children, with events taking place throughout the year. These events kick off annually on the first Friday in February, which is Give Kids A Smile Day. Thousands of dentists and volunteers give their time to provide free oral health education, screenings, and treatment to underserved children.
During our workshops young patients, family members, volunteer dental practioners and students volunteered to support this fun community based team building cause. In the reception area, we engaged every willing participant to contribute a smile design by matching their smile to a word that represent the meaning behind their smile. The end result was an original 30” x 30” original collage on canvas that depicts the message that everyone deserves a healthy smile!
